Europe Rail Travel Agent

For Americans, traveling to Europe can be an expensive affair. The high cost of
air travel, rental cars, and hotels can quickly add up. However, with a little
research and planning, you can save money and make the most of your trip by
planning your rail travel. Europe’s high-speed rail network makes it easy to get
from one major city to the next, and many of the continent’s major destinations
can be visited by rail at a lower cost than flying or renting a car. The following
blog post has several helpful tips for planning a rail-heavy trip to Europe.
Book your train travel in advance

Trains in Europe run on a very specific schedule, and often there is not a great
deal of difference between the dates for one route and another. However, there
are some exceptions to this. For example, the Paris-Lyon railway, which runs
through the heart of France, has a much more varied schedule than the trains
that run between France’s other major cities. There is also the possibility of
strikes or other disruptions, so it’s best to book your train travel as far ahead as
possible.

Research the train lines and time-effective travel

Most European train lines run several different types of train services, so it’s
important to do your research to find the right type of train for your needs. For
example, the German ICE train line offers high-speed intercity service, but many
cities in Eastern and Northern Europe also have excellent regional trains that are
a more affordable, slower, but still comfortable option for most journeys.

Take a regional train for the best value for your money

A lot of people are put off taking a regional train in Europe due to the
“backpacker’s” stigma, but this is a very short-sighted view. While it is true that
many of these trains do not have the amenities you would find on a more

expensive high-speed train, many also do not have the price tag that comes with
it either. For example, the Dutch regional train ticket between Amsterdam and
Rotterdam costs just €19 ($23) one-way, making it an excellent option for a tight
budget.

Visit Germany, Switzerland, and Norway for a rail-
dominated trip

Germany has excellent high-speed rail services across much of the country, with
ICE and the Trans-Sylvia trains providing service between major cities.
Switzerland also has excellent high-speed rail services, with the Swiss Pass
allowing unlimited travel on the country’s trains, including its high-speed trains,
for a very reasonable price. Norway offers excellent regional trains at a much
lower cost than some of its neighbors.

Visit France and Italy for a rail-dominated trip

France and Italy also have excellent regional trains, with both countries’ national
train companies, SNCF and NTV (Italy), offering some of the easiest and most
comfortable long-distance train journeys in Europe. Both countries also have
excellent high-speed rail services, with the TGV service between Paris and Lyon
and the Apulia Line connecting some of the country’s major cities in just a couple
of hours.

Visit the Netherlands for a rail-dominated trip

The Netherlands has excellent regional trains that make up for the lack of high-
speed rail services in the country by offering a high level of comfort and service
at a much lower price than most of its neighbors. Because the Netherlands is
also well-known for its excellent public transport system, it is easy to get around
without the hassle or cost of renting a car.

Visit Hungary and Czech Republic for a rail-dominated
trip

Both Hungary and the Czech Republic offer excellent regional trains at very low
costs. The Czech Republic in particular has very few high-speed rail services,
making it a great place to combine a rail-heavy visit with some of the country’s
excellent motorway routes.
